In this introduction to Contour Drawing class, you will focus on a different still life every week, learning the basics of contour drawing and it’s uses and applications, as well as alternative drawing techniques. You will also learn some beginner level shading and lining techniques, and ways to apply them with pencils and eventually ink.

If you have experience and have a particular project you would like to work on for the duration of the class, you are welcome to contact the instructor and work on an alternative project.

Please bring any favorite pens and fine liners you prefer, as well as pencils and paper, or a sketchbook if you have particular supplies you want to work with. Otherwise, all students will be provided with paper and illustration tools.

Artist Statement: Frank Stangel is an illustrator and painter from the DFW area that primarily focuses on colored pencils, contour, ink, and watercolor. He started drawing at 17 and was completely self taught, until studying art at North Lake College in his 30’s. His primary focus is exploring mental health and death positivity in his work, as well as working on portraits and figure. Contour and line work mixed with flat color is the foundation of 90% of his art. He currently lives in the Irving area and works fulltime.
