Here, Then; Now Then: In Between Journeys…ceramics showcase

The Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery at the University of Dallas Presents: Here, Then; Now Then: In Between Journeys

March 10 – April 8, 2021

Artists:  Sin-ying HoNuokan Huang, ChengOu YuWanying LiangShiyuan XuYewen Dong, and Jing Huang

This exhibition brings together the artwork of seven ceramic artists who explore the traditional and the contemporary, nature and artifact, and displacement and sense of belonging.  They explore these themes through their cross-cultural understanding and interpretation of China and the United States.

The sculptural ceramic works in the exhibition showcase each artist’s interpretation of his/her transcultural experience. Inspired by nature and landscape, Shiyuan Xu, Wanying Liang, and Yewen Dong’s work explores growth and tension and translates relationships of movement, space, and memory into sculptural forms. Jing Huang and Nuokan Huang are influenced by the Chinese art of miniature landscapes and reflect on the relationship between the natural and the synthetic.  ChengOu Yu and Sin-ying Ho work with traditional pottery forms and symbols, re-contextualizing the intersecting cultures of East and West and the contemporary and traditional. Collectively, the work of these artists brings together the potential and possibility of hybridization and integration of cultures and gives voice to the transformative power of contemporary ceramic art.

The exhibition coincides with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) annual conference Rivers, Reflections, Reinventions, which will be held virtually March 17 – 21, 2021. Artist Shiyuan Xu has been awarded a  2021 NCECA Emerging Artist Award.
