Expressive Pastels: Loosen Up and Add some Spice to your Paintings with Karen Margulis PSA IAPS- MC

The Pastel Society of the Southwest has organized a F2F workshop this fall. October 4-6, 2021

Karen Margulis is a full-time artist and art educator. She lives in Atlanta Georgia with her husband Michael. Karen received her BA in Education from the University of Florida. She currently teaches painting workshops around the world.

Karen is a contemporary landscape painter. She works in most painting media but has achieved recognition for her pastel paintings. She has exhibited her award-winning work around the world and has been reviewed by Pastel Journal for her wildflower paintings. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and a Masters Circle recipient of the International Association of Pastel Societies. She was recently a faculty member at the prestigious IAPS Convention.

Karen has a passion for travel and painting while on location. She enjoys the opportunity to share her techniques and approach to making art in her workshops. She is known for her ability to make art simple, accessible to all and fun.

Karen is also an avid Daily Painter and blogger. She paints every day, and shares her work, art tips and inspiration in her daily posts on her blog ‘Painting My World’.  It has been said that as artists we are either moving toward or away from abstraction. No matter where we fall on this journey, we can all benefit from ideas to help us create more expressive paintings. I am always striving to interpret my subject by including my own personal touch rather than a copying the reference or painting exactly what I see.

In this workshop, Karen will share some of the ways she discovered to paint in a more expressive ‘loose’ manner.  She will introduce a simple method for a successful pastel painting from the planning stage to the addition of those final important spices!   We will also explore the use of underpaintings and how they contribute to more expressive pastel paintings. She will demonstrate two different underpainting techniques. Students will use an underpainting to develop their paintings.

In addition, we will continue to explore techniques that will lead to more expressive paintings with an exploration of new and exciting ways to start a pastel painting.   There will be demos, handouts and plenty of individual help during the workshop.
